After two years of taking tennis lessons, John decided he wanted a change. So in September, he and I went to one of the local gyms to get more information about other sports that he could participate in this school year. Now I was thinking something traditional like soccer or judo, maybe basketball. Really anything that would keep him active for about 2 hours to expend some of his energy. I also wanted something he could continue into middle school and high school. I thought I had him sold on soccer until we passed the Fencing, Escrime in French, table. On their flyer were Star Wars lightsabers and at the time he was really into Star Wars. After talking with the instructor and getting a pass for one free session, he decided to give it a try. Now I must admit, I was not crazy about a bunch of 9 year olds running around with swords in their hands!
Well, now it is 9 months later and I am proud to say that John has taken this sport seriously and has learned a lot about fencing. He has learned how to salute his opponent before starting a match and the correct way to touché in order to score a point. The goal is not to constantly cross swords, but to actually touch the protected chest area of your opponent. Saturday, we had the pleasure of watching him in a mini tournament and receive his medal for participation. One of the highlights of the day was seeing Preston fence against John. John didn't hesitate to try some of his moves on his dad!
As you will see in the video below, John is very agile and has great form.
I love it when my children decide to try something new and not only like it, but love it!
Congratulations John on a job well done.
